HEARTSAVER AED TRAINING-  AED (or Automated External Defibrillator) training is one of the newest and exciting advances in pre-hospital, emergency management of cardiac arrest.  Defibrillation has been a standard part of emergency cardiac care for years.  However, in the past, only trained medical personnel were able to deliver this life-saving treatment by placing paddles on a victim's chest and delivering an electrical shock to the heart.  The medical personnel had to know how to read an EKG strip and make medical decisions based on that strip.  But the AED is different! It is a small, computerized machine that does not require training in EKG interpretation because it does it for you!  Recently, the American Heart Association is pushing to make AEDs available anywhere large groups of people gather.  When used in conjunction with early access to EMS, early bystander CPR and early ACLS, the AEDs can significantly increase the chances that a cardiac arrest victim will survive.  This training will also become important in the workplace in reducing occupational deaths from cardiac arrest.
